- Lodwig & Co -

Welcome to our tenth annual private-owner wagon release! We have continued with our successful signature commission of a triple-gauge Swansea-based coal wagon, this year in the lead-grey livery of Lodwig & Co with their 7 plank end-door wagon.

Obtaining information on the company’s background was extremely difficult with very little on-line, however it was certainly in existence in late Victorian times. A trade directory shows J Lodwig as a coal merchant in 1899 and Lodwig & Co as shipping and colliery agents, and coal exporters, with offices in York Street, roughly adjacent to where The Vue Cinema and Kwik-Fit are now. A 1913 entry sees the company listed as colliery proprietors also, although which are the collieries is not clear. Beyond that we have not been able to find anything more about the company’s history.

The company acquired wagons on various terms from a number of manufacturers and our release is based on the 7-plank wagon, one of 20 delivered in 1902, from the Gloucester Carriage and Wagon Works. Below is a photo of the impressive O Gauge release.
